ACT For Health Grantee: Saathealth

After years of working in the pharmaceutical sector – Aditi Ganju, a clinical biochemist, and her husband Dr. Aakash Ganju began thinking about how they could enable healthier futures for India’s underserved communities.

Saathealth, their entrepreneurial venture, was born as an attempt to help low-income families get easy access to credible health information and make timely healthcare decisions.

At the peak of COVID’s 2nd wave, they realised the wide gap between such communities and healthcare providers and decided to create an AI powered app. One that could not only share health information in an engaging and gamified way but also drive better health outcomes through connections with affordable healthcare.

Today, the Saathealth app is tailored to vernacular needs and has already reached over 7 million individuals across 10 cities!

We’re so excited to see the change their efforts will bring in India’s healthcare landscape in the coming time!

ACT For Environment Grantee: Farmers For Forests

Planting the seeds for social change; one farmer at a time!

Climate change cannot be solved without addressing ecosystem destruction and biodiversity loss. This was the thought that led Krutika Ravishankar, Jaspreet Kaur and Arti Dhar to start Farmers For Forests – an organisation that empowers the farmer community to combat deforestation.

Farmers For Forests was born of an urgent need to come up with a sustainable & scalable solution that enables reforestation; in a way that is inclusive of the economic interests of the community.

Using the innovative payment for ecosystem services (PES) model, local farmers are treated as stewards of the forests and are financially compensated for implementing actions that nurture young forests or protect the biodiversity of existing ones – like carbon sequestration, groundwater recharge, nurturing biodiversity habitat, afforestation etc.

The model provides a sustainable way to encourage indigenous communities to work towards ecosystem protection by helping them get additional income & livelihood security.

We’re thrilled to have them on board and look forward to the positive impact their work will have on India’s green goals!

ACT For Environment Grantee: Ambee

When Madhusudhan Anand’s son was an infant, he would wake up choking and gasping for air every morning. Doctors were unable to figure out the reason and while Madhusudhan suspected air pollution to be the cause – he couldn’t find any reliable measures on air quality.

He built a sensor and drove around his neighbourhood in Bengaluru; creating a heat map on air quality. As it turned out, the air was indeed toxic but no one had identified it as an issue because there was no one measuring it.

Ambee was born of one man’s resolve to drive climate action on air pollution using real time data. Using proprietary data science and AI that combines raw data from satellites and thousands of on-ground sensors, it provides hyperlocal intelligence that can help cities identify pollution hotspots and take action in real time.

Having partnered with the likes of NASA, Ambee is now working on enabling India to act against air pollution by partnering with local government bodies on using Ambee’s data sets to manage city-level climate action plans.

We’re proud to have them on board and can’t wait to witness the impact they’ll help create in the time to come!

ACT For Environment Grantee: FIBSOL

Even the simplest innovations have the potential to change the world!

Chemical fertilisers have long deprived agricultural soil of its natural ecosystem, thus reducing soil fertility. They’re also a major source of carbon emissions – 1 ton of chemical fertiliser releases almost 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide.

Dr. Kavitha Sairam , an expert in biochemistry and molecular biology, started FIBSOL to provide farmers with a bio alternative to chemical fertilisers. She created a gel-based product which contains a huge amount of good bacteria beneficial for increasing the yield of high-quality and nutritious food.

The gel-based technology also increases the shelf life of bacteria twofold, cuts down on bulk mass and does not need any special storage; thus reducing transportation and warehousing costs for farmers as well.

So far, FIBSOL has helped farmers reduce their use of chemical fertilisers by 50%, reduce their input costs by 22% and yet have a 20% higher, more nutritive yield!

ACT For Environment Grantee: REVY

For aeons, farmers have used stubble burning as a way to dispose of the waste that remains once harvesting is done.

A practice that damages the soil and causes massive air pollution. An easy example that comes to mind is that of Delhi, where the air pollution is mainly attributed to stubble burning by farmers in Punjab and Haryana.

Dr. Vanita Prasad, who hails from Delhi, witnessed this suffocating environment for many years and decided to work on a solution to the issue. With over 28 years of experience as an environmental scientist, she founded REVY Environmental Solutions to provide economical waste management solutions.

Agricultural stubble can actually be a big boon for farmers as bio manure; this is the premise on which the REVY team created the REVY Stub Kit – a specialised microbial formulation that could transform stubble into a rich organic manure.

When sprayed on stubble, the microbial cultures carry out a quick process of decomposition and produce beneficial by-products that enrich soil quality. The use of the REVY Stub Kit helps farmers avoid stubble burning; thus lowering their contribution to air pollution and also enables them to reduce their dependence on expensive chemical fertilisers.

REVY Stub Kit was recently tested in Punjab and Haryana during cropping season and the results have been exceptionally positive and we’re proud to have them on board as an ACT For Environment grantee!

Jumping into ACTion!

ACT came into being during when the COVID crisis hit India – we worked tirelessly to find capital-efficient, scalable solutions that could fight the spread of the pandemic.

Here are some of the orgs we supported through the 1st and 2nd waves:

InnAccel: Developed SAANS PRO – a non-invasive ventilation system that provides respiratory support to moderately severe hypoxemic Covid patients and CPAP – a ventilation helmet which prevents the spread of infection from the patient’s exhalation, cough etc.

Qure.ai: Created an AI powered diagnostic solution for detecting COVID & worked with BMC to deal with testing volumes that exceeded the regular capacity of hospitals and testing centres.

Nocca Robotics: Designed, developed, tested and deployed the indigenous Noccarc V310 ICU ventilator in collaboration with SIIC IIT Kanpur – a user-friendly machine that proved to be very effective in treating COVID-19 patients at a moderate stage of hypoxia.

Haqdarshak: Digitally equipped citizens from low-income communities with facilities that would help them financially & get them the required essentials to tide through the lockdown period and thereafter.

HouseJoy: Launched Housejoy Care & worked with Bangalore’s local government to transform 4 KSRTC buses into mobile COVID healthcare clinics which provided subsidised blood, sugar, BP and COVID testing.

ImpactGuru: Launched COVID centric online fundraisers to support daily wagers, senior citizens, healthcare workers, animals etc. and matched 20% of all incoming donations.

DronaMaps: Created a digital dashboard for 5 state governments that included geofencing of quarantined patients, cluster analysis of the spread, location tracking with CDR & predictive analysis for spatial spread.

As the 2nd Delta wave hit with deadly force, ACT collaborated with several government bodies & organisations to aid oxygenation relief in real time for vulnerable communities.

These include Transforming Rural India Foundation (Jharkhand), Indian Air Force (Goa), Rightwalk Foundation (Uttar Pradesh), District Health Department (Nagaland), Hans Foundation (Uttarakhand), Sant Ishar Singh Ji Memorial Hospital (Punjab) & GSVM Medical College (Uttar Pradesh), Government Lawley Hospital (Tamil Nadu), CR Gardi Municipal Hospital (Madhya Pradesh) etc.

“The COVID-19 pandemic emerged as one of the greatest challenges that the state of Punjab has faced in recent times. Inspite of the efforts of the government, the containment of this scourge would not have been possible without the whole-hearted support of philanthropic organisations and the industry.

On behalf of the government and the people of Punjab, I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to ACT for the manner in which you came forward to support the state government during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Your contribution has helped augment the relief efforts of the state and its preparedness to manage the crisis.” – Capt. Amarinder Singh (CM, Punjab)

We also enabled affordable homecare by supporting training programs for ASHA workers and collaborating with orgs like Hanumaan (Bihar) for last mile delivery.

As hope dawned in the form of a vaccine, ACT jumped into enabling vaccinations for high-risk occupation groups in low-income communities by partnering with organisations like Swasti, Labournet, Teach For India, iTeach, CREDAI, Uplift, Akanksha Foundation, Robin Hood Army, Surendra Pathare Foundation, Pune Municipal Corporation & many more.

The onslaught of the pandemic may be receding but the recent rise in cases has made it imperative to boost prevention protocols.

And so we’ve continued to keep our eye on the ball by collaborating with Hanesbrands & Delhivery to distribute 2.5 Cr+ facemasks across 11 states for children, self help groups, frontline workers, police and army personnel, government offices, PHCs and taluka health centre staff.

“I extend my gratitude to ACT for their generous contribution. This act of benevolence and goodwill will impact the lives of millions – each mask will help safeguard a whole community!” – Mr. Jayant Sinha, MP – Hazaribagh (Jharkhand)

A little over 2 years later, we can only marvel at the power that collective action has to drive social impact at scale.

Our deepest gratitude for every single person who stood firmly by our side through it all and helped India fight the crisis in good stead!
